We’ll be walking dogs, patting cats, making toys, helping with cleaning. To sign up load up the link below:

Please note, activities depend on what animals are there at the time, the weather and what Socares staff need on the day.

Introducing Xena

We’re excited to welcome Xena, our newly appointed Hub Manager, to the team. Xena is the newly appointed Gig Buddies Hub Manager, and is tasked with assisting hub coordinators in establishing, developing and growing hubs.

Here’s more from Xena:

“I feel privileged and excited to be joining the Gig Buddies team! I’ll be creating community awareness of Gig Buddies, welcoming new participants into the program and pairing them with their perfect buddy.

As the newly appointed Hub Manager, I will also be working with Hub Coordinators to build on and develop new and existing regions for the Gig buddies project.

Like many of our participants I love going out to the movies, food festivals and really love seeing live music. I listen to a wide variety of artists with my favourite genres in metal especially bands from Scandinavia and Iceland.

My work background has been in health and community services most of my adult life, I have also worked in events management.

I love working with people to live their life their way and enabling them to do things that excite them.

Thanks to the Gig Buddies Sydney community for the warm welcome!”

Welcome to the team, Xena - we’re delighted to have you on board.

“It’s nice to have a friend that you don’t always have to do something huge with…”

Gig buddy and Soul Fly Band member, Jack, has shared his views on being part of the project.

Socialisation is tough for someone with a learning disability at the best of times, but lockdown adds a whole new level of challenge.Myself and my buddy Brendan kept in touch throughout the lockdown by FaceTiming each other.

In the past three months (since lockdown ended) I have gone to see Uncharted in 4DX as well as getting lunch and a beer at my local pub with Brendan, both for different reasons. In the case of Uncharted, I’d gone through something challenging in my personal life and the movies are my personal safe haven - and I was glad I got to share that with Brendan. The highlight of 4DX is easily watching people’s reaction to the sudden and intense motion of the experience.

In the case of the pub, It was to celebrate getting my first proper job - and Brendan was more than ready to share in that success. It’s nice to have a friend that you don’t always have to do something huge with, just someone you can have a beer and a laugh with.

What these occasions both demonstrate is your buddy is someone that can always make time for you through the good and the bad. My life wouldn’t be half as enjoyable as it is without Brendan and Gig Buddies in it.

Jack
