NDIS & the Gig Buddies project

What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new way of providing support for Australians with disability, as well as to their families and carers. The scheme takes a lifetime approach to ensuring that Australians with disability will have the necessary support they need to live an ordinary life.

How does Gig Buddies work with the NDIS

The standard administration charge for Gig buddies Participants is equivalent to *3 hours per month (see NDIS funding categories below) which supports the project to do the following:

• Recruiting & training of the Volunteer, including reference & screening checks

• Interviewing the Participant & significant others in their lives

• Facilitating the initial meeting between the Participant & the Volunteer

• Supporting the Participant & their Volunteer on their first outing

• Ongoing mentoring & support for the Participant & their Volunteer

• Regular communication with Participants both in and outside of working hours

• Facilitating a rematch for a Participant if the need arises

• Organising and facilitating Gig Buddies social events for all Participants

• Sourcing venues, building relationships with sporting clubs & entertainment locations

• Liaising with disability organisations, local councils & advocate groups

Gig Buddies provides ongoing support to all Participants, facilitating mainstream social & sporting opportunities to enable an experience beyond the limitations of a disability specific event.

Gig Buddies is a volunteer based buddying program that aims to facilitate long-term friendships. It is not a substitute for paid support.

The Gig Buddies charge is a fixed amount and is invoiced every month.

Gig Buddies has a standard administrative charge for participants that is the same each month. The price is dictated by the current NDIS Price Guide.

The charge facilitates the Gig Buddies team to run the project, but also allows participants access to attend the many Gig Buddies socials, both online and face-to-face, that the team organises.

As well as meeting up with their volunteer at least once a month, participants are encouraged to engage with the project’s social events as much as they would like to, to ensure that they get as much out of the project as they can.

Read Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) here.

*The 3 hour per month administration fee is to provide services to all participants and to support the administration and continuation of the project. It has no direct relation to actual hours spent with a volunteer.
