"… its been nothing short of amazing…"

To mark the final Monday of the month we’re reopening our vault and handing over the newsletter to one of our volunteers.

Today we hear from Alvin (below right), who tells us more about his match with buddy Andrew (below left).

- How long have you been volunteering with Gig Buddies?

I have been volunteering with Gig Buddies since end-2021.

- Is Gig Buddies your first volunteering role?

I have been volunteering with other organisations in my local area since 2020.

- Why do you volunteer with Gig Buddies?

I'd like to make a difference to other lives and the premise of Gig Buddies is so sweet, and I'd like to be a part of that!

- How would you describe your volunteering experience with Gig Buddies?

Fantastic. Everyone has been so friendly and helpful.

There are lots of support and ideas of what to do and where to go, there's always something fun upcoming!

- Tell us about some of the highlights from your time volunteering with Gig Buddies?

Gig Buddies was able to source tickets to a live DJ event (Duke Dumont) - Andrew and I managed to get the tickets and it turns out it was Andrew's first time at a live event. We both had an amazing time dancing to some awesome tunes.

And there was another time when we won an outing from our photos from Gig Buddies - so Andrew and I went out for burgers and Moonlight Cinemas to watch Elf for Christmas.

- What would you say to someone reading this who is thinking about volunteering with Gig Buddies?

I would highly recommend it! It's such a fulfilling experience. The Gig Buddies team are awesome - it's been nothing short of amazing for Andrew and I!

"It's such a fulfilling experience"

Thank you Alvin for sharing your Gig Buddies’ story. Both he and Andrew are a perfect example of who we are, what we aim to achieve, and how we go about it.

And we’re always on the lookout for more people like Alvin. If you would like to volunteer with us, look no further: to sign up with our Sydney project click here, and jump on this link to get involved on the Central Coast.

Gigs, gigs, gigs

October is almost upon us and attention now turns towards the month’s EIGHT social gatherings.

Starting tomorrow when we head to Terrigal for tacos and trivia, next month we’re also hosting our first ever ‘under 30s gathering’, a Gig Buddies road trip, pottery, a trip to Taronga Zoo, putt putt and dinner catch ups.

We’ll be connecting with buddies in Terrigal, Narellan, Kogarah, Dee Why, Bondi, the CBD, Mosman and Milperra as we offer the following:

Please note, our halloween silent disco is now sold out.

It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas

Looking beyond October, tickets to our two festive gatherings are flying out the door!

As a reminder, on Thursday 21 November we’ll be taking over the top floor at the Rose of Australia in Erskineville.

Expect a night of festive cheer, tasty treats and plenty of party classics at our Sydney catch up.

Then later that week we head to Kincumber on the Central Coast, stopping off at Shady Palms.

We’ll be meeting up for a bite to eat and we’re inviting buddies to join us as we celebrate the end of another year.

The month that was….

Our September socials concluded at the weekend, finishing off with trips to Gosford and Kellyville Ridge.

These two catch ups were in addition to the other SIX we facilitated during the month. Thank you to everyone who joined us in the CBD, Coogee, Rhodes, Campbelltown, Cronulla and Avalon Beach.

"I enjoyed it so much…."

Each and every month we bring you the latest from those who make up our user-led team, Soul Fly Buddies.

For September we hear from Lachy, who shares stories of catch ups with his buddy Sherie and group outings with Central Coast project.

"What a busy month I’ve had as we started off with a concert down in Sydney with Sherie where we saw the band Story of the Year at the Roundhouse (below). The concert was great but we didn’t get home until the early hours of the morning so I was a bit tired the next day.

The day after that I went on another long drive to the Hawkesbury with my mother for a family birthday. It was a nice catch up with my cousins and their cute dog, Daisy.

A few weeks after that I went to the cinema at Erina with Sherie and the Central Coast Gig Buddies crew to see Trap. I enjoyed it so much I went to see it again a few days later. I’ve been going to the movies quite a bit lately and have seen Twisters and Sleeping Dogs as well as some filmed musicals, American in Paris and 42nd Street.

I’ve been out to lunch and dinner a few times around the local area in Summerland Point and Swansea and now I’m thinking of our annual holiday in Forster in September with heaps of our family. Also I’m looking forward to catching up with Sherie soon to see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”
