The last Monday of the month is upon us and that means only one thing: it’s time to open our volunteer vault.
Here’s how our feature works: simply, we invite a current volunteer to talk about their experiences with the project. This time we hear from Mark (below left), who tells us more about his pairing with Harry (below right).
- How long have you been volunteering with Gig Buddies?
Coming up for 2.5 years.
- Is Gig Buddies your first volunteering role?
Aye.
- Why do you volunteer with Gig Buddies?
I volunteer with Gig Buddies because being able to combine all of your favourite things, i.e. great mates, live sport, a couple of cheeky beers whilst at the same time hopefully making a difference, is honestly incredible.
- How would you describe your volunteering experience with Gig Buddies?
Hand on heart it's been amazing. From meeting my buddy Harry who is an absolute legend, to so many other pairs of buddies and the beautiful team of people making Gig Buddies the success it is, it has been so much more than I could have ever imagined. I genuinely love being a part of it.
- Tell us about some of the highlights from your time volunteering with Gig Buddies?
There are so many highlights. It always inevitably revolves around sport with Harry and me. Whether it's at Brookvale watching the Sea Eagles, the SCG watching the Swans or Sixers or playing bowls or golf, there's always a ball involved.
I really enjoy doing events with other pairs too as I've met some great new friends along the way.
- What would you say to someone reading this who is thinking about volunteering with Gig Buddies?
Every day you spend thinking about it is another day you're missing out on meeting people who I guarantee will add so much fun, colour and joy to your life.
"Hand on heart it's been amazing"
Mark is a fine example of who we are and what aim to achieve. In his own words, “I genuinely love being a part of it (Gig Buddies)”.
We appreciate him taking the time to share his and Harry’s story.

"It was good to reconnect with other buddies"
Every month we share the news and views of those who make up our user-led advisory group, Soul Fly Buddies.
This time it’s the turn of Karen (below right), who provides an update on her recent catch ups with buddy, Lisa (below left).
“On Saturday, 27th May, my buddy Lisa and I attended the Central Coast Comicon along with other gig buddies. The event took place at Central Coast Entertainment Grounds and provided a platform for enthusiasts and fans to come together and celebrate their love for comics, movies, and popular culture.
Both Lisa and I decided to participate in the fun by dressing up as iconic characters. I chose to embody the female Joker, while Lisa embraced the role of Catwoman. The event was filled with an electric atmosphere as we joined countless other individuals who had also put effort into their costumes. It was truly thrilling to witness the creative and imaginative cosplay on display.
Central Coast Comicon boasted a variety of stalls, each offering a unique range of merchandise related to comics, movies, and other aspects of pop culture. As we explored the event, we were captivated by the diverse array of collectibles and memorabilia available. From action figures and comic books to artwork and clothing, there was something for everyone. It was delightful to browse through the stalls, appreciating the attention to detail and passion behind each item.
One of the highlights of the day was witnessing the enthusiasm and dedication of fellow attendees. People of all ages, dressed in their favourite characters' costumes, created a vibrant and energetic atmosphere. The event provided a space for fans to engage with each other, exchanging compliments, taking photos, and discussing their shared interests. It was a heartwarming experience to witness the sense of community and camaraderie that prevailed throughout the day.
Central Coast Comicon delivered a range of entertainment options that catered to different interests. There were panel discussions, Q&A sessions with special guests, interactive activities, and live performances. The entertainment program allowed attendees to engage with industry professionals, learn more about their favourite franchises, and participate in engaging and enjoyable activities. The organisers successfully curated a diverse program that contributed to the overall enjoyment of the event.
Our experience at Central Coast Comicon was incredibly enjoyable. The event provided an immersive and engaging platform for fans to indulge in their shared passion for comics, movies, and popular culture. From the captivating costumes to the diverse stalls and entertaining activities, the day was filled with excitement and enthusiasm. The sense of community and shared interests added to the overall positive experience. We left the event with lasting memories and a desire to return in the future.
Overall, Central Coast Comicon was a resounding success, and we highly recommend it to anyone who wants to immerse themselves in a world of fantasy, creativity, and entertainment.
Additionally, Lisa and I caught up last Sunday at the Christmas in July social, held in Gosford. This event was another exciting gathering for our gig buddy group. It was a chance for us to celebrate the holiday season in a unique way, embracing the festive spirit even during the mid-year. It was a joyful atmosphere, with traditional food and drinks.
It was good to reconnect with other buddies and enjoy the company of like-minded individuals who share our enthusiasm for festive celebrations.”

A meeting of minds
On the subject of Soul Fly Buddies, they caught up last Friday (28/7) for a mid-year meet.
Often, their monthly meetings take place via Zoom. However, this time members travelled from Sydney and the Central Coast to Hawkesbury.
As always, it’s great to get in insight from our user-led team. Thanks to everyone for joining us on the Sydney/Central Coast border.
If you would like to know more about what Soul Fly Buddies discuss, the minutes from all their monthly meetings can be found here.
