Crossing the ditch

Last Monday Soul Fly Band member, Audrey (below), headed to New Zealand to inform attendees at the annual ASID (Australasian Society for Intellectual Disability) Conference about Gig Buddies Sydney.

Taking place in Wellington, Audrey spoke in line with the conference theme, ‘Responding to the call: building partnerships that enrich lives’, detailing her involvement with our user-led group, Soul Fly Band, and her experiences with the service - including trips to the theatre, karaoke and dinner outings with her buddy, Marissa (below).

Audrey was joined by Carol and Tony from the Gig Buddies Sydney team and advocated on behalf of Lachie, Stavros, Alyse, Fraser and Tarmika - other Soul Fly Band members - and informed the audience about how our user-led group “help people with disabilities get out more and do different things”.

As an organisation we’re always looking for advocacy opportunities. Be it recruitment for service users, both adults with disabilities and volunteers, or speaking with external organisations, such as councils or hotels, we’re always happy to inform new audiences about our service.
