Work with us

We're looking for two new employees to join the Gig Buddies team.

Specifically, we’re after a Greater Western Sydney Hub Coordinator and Southern Sydney Hub Coordinator.

They will be the first point of contact for those based within the respective regions. Both appointees will work with the Gig Buddies team; they will connect with existing and potential service users - helping us to increase awareness of who we are and what we do.

The closing date for applications is Friday 10 February. For more information about both roles, click here.

And if this sounds like something you would be interested in, send your CV to project CEO, Carol Smail: carol@assistcom.org. Additionally, if you would like more information about the position, call us on 02 9419 6951.

February frolics

Limited tickets are still available for a number of our February outings.

Next Sunday (12/2) we head to Bronte for a beach day. One day later, Monday 13/2, we then partake in a Gig Buddies first - a Monday morning in the pub for the Super Bowl! We’ll be there for America’s biggest sporting event of the year, the clash between Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.

And we wrap things up for the month at North Sydney’s outdoor cinema for the Whitney Houston biopic ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’.

Please note, tickets to the Comedy Store Showcase at Moore Park’s Entertainment Quarter have now sold out.

Calling all Western Sydney buddies

Our user-led team, Soul Fly Buddies, are on the lookout for a new Western Sydney-based member.

For those not in the know, Soul Fly Buddies, formerly known as Soul Fly Band, is the project’s advisory group - made up of participants from Sydney and the Central Coast. They meet monthly, advising and overseeing the ongoing work of Gig Buddies.

As for the role itself, in line with establishing our Western Sydney hub, we’re after representation from the area. Buddies based in any of the following council LGAs can apply: Campbelltown, Camden, Blacktown, Parramatta, Penrith, Liverpool, Castle Hill (and the Hills Shire area).

For those of you wanting to know more about Soul Fly Buddies, check out this brief video containing past and present members.

And if you want to know why you should join our current members (Stavros, Lachy, Jack, Alex, Nalyn, Joni, Karen and Audrey) for our monthly meetups, the following video may provide you with some answers.

Our user led-team have been around since 2016. They meet on the last Friday of each month for around 1 hour, usually via Zoom. They have an in-person meeting at least once a year.

If you would like to join the Soul Fly Buddies, register your interest by clicking here. Alternatively, if you would like more information, feel free to get in touch. We can be reached via Facebook Messenger, email (info@gigbuddiesydney.org) or text: 0412 145 819.

Two up

We are delighted to welcome our two newest matches to the team.

Step forward Jimmy and Sharon (left, L - R) and Liam and Hugh (right, L - R). We’re looking to hearing about your forthcoming adventures.

The power of the Companion Card

We’re all all for raising awareness of the benefits of the NSW Companion Card.

For those not in the know, the NSW Companion Card program “is for people with significant and permanent disability who need a high level of care in the community. The Companion Card allows a cardholder's support person free entry into participating venues and events.”

While we know of a number of buddies who already own one, there are others out there who may be unaware of the benefits.

From our perspective, we believe that the more people who have access to the Companion Card, the more opportunities participants get to experience what Sydney and the Central Coast has to offer.

If you’d like to know more about the NSW Companion Card, or if your application has been rejected, please get in touch: we can be reached via Facebook Messenger, email: info@gigbuddiessydney.org or via text or phone call on 0411 252 228.

Share your thoughts - last chance

Thanks to everyone who’s taken the time to complete our recent survey.

This is your last chance to share your thoughts on how buddies could expand their social circles with those who live nearby - a suggestion put forward to us at the end of last year.

We love the idea.

However, due to the ongoing work involved in facilitating the Gig Buddies project, we do not have the capacity to drive such a program: volunteer training, overseeing buddy pairings, organising social events, checking in with participants, plus the required administration means we unfortunately do not have the time or hands to play a part.

Therefore, we’re reaching out our community to find out if this could be facilitated by buddies.

Please share your thoughts by completing our survey. Load up this link to get involved.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch: we can be reached via Facebook Messenger, email: info@gigbuddiessydney.org or via text or phone call on 0411 252 228.
