Forget the gym membership.... Take up volunteering

Four days in to 2016 and some may have given thought to (and possibly broken) their new year’s resolution.

Dust off the gym gear, quit smoking, pack in the drink, start saving, spend more time with the family, take up travelling, lose weight, learn a new skill - resolutions that apparently top the list for most frequently broken.

Going cold turkey or committing to a lifestyle change may not be for all, but volunteering – another that also fails to stand the test of time – by going to see your favourite band or cheering on your team may make you reconsider your resolution of choice.

We’re looking for volunteers who can commit for ten hours a month. Once you have completed an online application we will pair you with a gig buddy who shares the same interests as you. Be it record collecting, going to live music gigs or bushwalking, we are looking for people who want to have some fun, make new friends and develop their skills.

We are also eagerly looking for volunteers who are passionate about watching live sport. Fans of soccer, union, cricket, NRL, AFL, basketball, baseball, netball, tennis, ice hockey, we want to hear from you.

Please note, to become a Gig Buddies Sydney volunteer no gym membership, drastic savings plan or a newly found penchant for parsnips is required. Even if we made no mention of your hobby, we want to hear from volunteers who share our ethos: to promote social inclusion by enabling people with learning disabilities to become an active part of Sydney’s events scene.

Finally, as today is the first Monday after the festive break, which may mark the return to work for some, why not treat yourself by buying tickets to New Zealand indie-pop rockers The Chills, who take to the Speigeltent next Wednesday (13/1)?

A group of gig buddies, volunteers and staff will be in attendance as we hit up Hyde Park, and we invite you to join us. If you would like any more information we’re at the end of a line (02 9419 6951) or only an email away.
